MCP server for expired domains

Add one URL to your AI assistant and ask for what you need. It searches the daily hunt, reads the reports, checks any domain you name and explains what it found.

What it does

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI assistant use outside tools. Our server gives the assistant the same functions as the REST API: search the lists, read a report, look up a registration record, order a full check. You ask in plain words and the assistant decides which tools to call.

Things people ask:

  • "Find clean expired domains about gardening with DR 30 or more, under $100."
  • "Which domains dropped this week and are still unregistered? Only .com and .org."
  • "Should I buy example.org? Check its history first."
  • "Is this list of names available: … And what is the Domain Rating of the registered ones?"
  • "Set up an alert for health domains in German with at least 10 years in the archive."
  • "Which old URLs should I rebuild on example.org to keep its backlinks?"

Two servers

Server URL Sign-in What it sees
Account https://hunter.domains/mcp Your hunter.domains account (OAuth), or an API key Everything your plan sees, plus your alert rules, watchlist and check credits
Free https://hunter.domains/mcp/free None The day's 5 open domains with basic reports, the archive, and the registry, DNS and Domain Rating lookups

Start with the free server if you only want to try it. Use the account server for real work: a free account already unlocks the detailed report of the open domains, and Pro unlocks the full list.

Both speak Streamable HTTP. There is nothing to install.

Connect

Menu names differ between clients and versions; look for "connectors", "integrations" or "MCP servers".

Claude (web and desktop)

Open Settings, then Connectors, then "Add custom connector". Give it a name and paste https://hunter.domains/mcp. Claude sends you to hunter.domains to sign in and approve, then the tools appear in the chat.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http hunter-domains https://hunter.domains/mcp

Run /mcp inside Claude Code to sign in. To use an API key instead of signing in:

claude mcp add --transport http hunter-domains https://hunter.domains/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer hd_…"

ChatGPT

In Settings, open the connectors section, switch on developer mode and create a connector with the URL https://hunter.domains/mcp and OAuth as the authentication. Custom connectors are available on the plans that OpenAI enables them for.

Cursor, VS Code and other editors

Most editors read a JSON file. For Cursor it is ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hunter-domains": {
      "url": "https://hunter.domains/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer hd_…" }
    }
  }
}

Leave headers out if the editor supports OAuth; it will open the sign-in page instead. Create the key on the API page of your account.

Clients that only run local servers

Bridge to the remote server with mcp-remote:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hunter-domains": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://hunter.domains/mcp"]
    }
  }
}

The server also offers two prompts, find_domains and evaluate_domain, in clients that show prompts as slash commands or templates.

Access and limits

  • The assistant sees what your account sees on the site. Domains on the Pro list never reach a free account by name; the assistant is told how many more matches exist and says so.
  • Requests count toward the same limits as the API: 30 a minute and 1,000 a day on the free plan, 120 and 20,000 on Pro. The free server allows 20 a minute and 300 a day per IP address.
  • check_domain uses one check credit for each new domain. The tool description tells the assistant to say so before it orders a check you did not ask for; many clients also ask you to approve each tool call.
  • The registry, DNS and Domain Rating lookups use the hourly lookup quota, not check credits.

Security

  • Signing in uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE. The assistant never sees your password, and no API key is stored in the client.
  • An approved app can read your lists and reports, read and change your alert rules and watchlist, and order domain checks. It cannot see your password, your payment details or your API keys.
  • Remove an app's access at any time under "Connected apps" on the API page of your account. It has to ask again afterwards.
  • Text inside a report (old page titles, anchor texts, archived pages) comes from third-party websites. Treat it as data; a well-behaved assistant does not follow instructions it finds there.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an MCP server for expired domains?

Yes. hunter.domains runs one at https://hunter.domains/mcp. It lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients search a daily list of vetted expired domains, read the full report of each one, check the history of any domain and run WHOIS, availability, DNS and Domain Rating lookups.

Is it free?

The free server needs no account. With a free account the account server also returns the detailed report of the day's open domains and one free domain check. The full list, Available now and alert rules are part of Pro.

Which clients work?

Any client that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP, with OAuth or with a header. That includes Claude (web, desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT with custom connectors, Cursor and VS Code. Clients that only run local servers work through mcp-remote.

Can the assistant buy a domain for me?

No. hunter.domains does not sell domains. The assistant gives you the link to the auction or to a registrar; you bid or register there yourself.

The assistant says a domain is on the Pro list. Why?

Your account is on the free plan and that domain is not one of the day's open domains. The assistant can still see the open domains, the archive and any domain you name through the lookups.
