## What the domain expiration checker shows

The domain expiration checker reads the expiry date of a domain from its registry record (RDAP) and shows the number of days left. The list is sorted with the soonest expiry on top, so a portfolio pasted in bulk shows what needs attention first.

If the domain is past its expiry, the result says which stage it is in: still renewable by the owner, in the 30-day redemption period, or in the last five days before it drops. For a domain you want to buy, that stage decides whether you bid in an auction, place a backorder or simply wait.

## How to read the result

- **Expires on**: The expiry date held by the registry, in UTC. Your registrar may show a date a day earlier or later because of time zones.
- **Days left**: Days until that date. Negative means the date has passed and the domain has not been deleted yet.
- **Redemption / pending delete**: The registrar has already deleted the domain. It is on its way to dropping; use the drop date calculator for the date.
- **Not registered**: The registry has no record: the domain is free to register now.

## Why the date can mislead

- **The registry renews.com and.net automatically at expiry.** When a.com or.net expires, the registry adds a year to the expiry date on its own and gives the registrar up to 45 days to cancel that renewal. During that time the registry record shows next year’s date even though the owner has not paid. A site that is down with an expiry date exactly a year ahead is a hint of this.
- **Expiry is not the day the domain becomes available.** After expiry come the registrar’s grace period, a 30-day redemption period and five days of pending delete. A domain drops roughly 35 to 80 days after its expiry date, if it drops at all.
- **Many expired domains never drop.** Registrars such as GoDaddy auction expired domains during the grace period. A domain sold that way moves to the buyer without ever being deleted.

## Domain Expiration Checker: frequently asked questions

**How do I find out when a domain expires?**

Enter it above. The tool asks the registry of the extension for the domain’s record and shows the expiry date and the days left. The same date appears in any WHOIS or RDAP lookup as “Registry Expiry Date”.

**What happens after a domain expires?**

For generic extensions the registrar first gives the owner a grace period of up to 45 days to renew at the normal price. Then the domain is deleted and enters a 30-day redemption period in which only the previous owner can restore it for a fee, followed by five days of pending delete. After that it is released and anyone can register it.

**The domain expired months ago. Why is it still registered?**

Either the owner renewed it late, or the registrar sold it in an expiry auction, or the registry record shows the automatic one-year renewal that happens at expiry for extensions such as.com. Check the status codes and the nameservers in the WHOIS lookup to tell which.

**Can I get a notification before a domain expires?**

Not from this tool. hunter.domains watches the domains in its own daily list of expiring and dropping domains and emails you about those; for a domain of your own, turn on auto-renew at your registrar.

**Does it work for every extension?**

It works for every extension whose registry offers RDAP, which covers generic extensions and many country codes. Some country-code registries do not publish an expiry date; the result says so when that happens.
