# Domain age checker: see how old a domain *really is*.

Enter one or more domains. You get the registration date from the registry, the age in years, months and days, and the year the site was first archived, which often tells a different story.

## What the domain age checker shows

The domain age checker reads the registration date from the registry record (RDAP) and counts the time from that date to today. That is the age of the current registration: the unbroken period in which the domain has been registered.

It also asks the Wayback Machine for the oldest capture of the site. When the first capture is years older than the registration date, the domain has had an earlier life: it expired, dropped and was registered again by someone else. For anyone buying an aged or expired domain, that gap is the first thing worth looking into.

## How to read the result

- **Registered on**: The creation date held by the registry. It resets when a domain drops and is registered again, so it is the age of this registration and not of the name.
- **Age**: Time since that date, in years and months. Shown to the day in the tooltip.
- **First archived**: The oldest Wayback Machine capture, fetched by your browser directly from archive.org. Older than the registration date means the domain was dropped and re-registered at least once. When archive.org does not answer, the cell links to the capture calendar instead.
- **Expires on**: The current expiry date at the registry. A domain that has been renewed for years ahead is rarely about to be abandoned.

## What domain age does not tell you

- **Age is not a ranking factor.** Google has said repeatedly that domain age by itself does not make a site rank. What an old domain can bring is the backlinks it earned while it was a live site.
- **Old is not the same as clean.** A domain registered in 2004 may have spent three of those years as a gambling page. Age says nothing about what was published on it.
- **Some registries publish no dates.** A few country-code registries (for example.de) return the status of a domain but not its registration date, and some offer no RDAP at all.

## Domain Age Checker: frequently asked questions

**How is domain age calculated?**

From the registration (creation) date in the registry record to today. The registry is the authoritative source: registrars and WHOIS sites all read the same date from it.

**Why is the first archive date older than the registration date?**

Because the domain was registered before, expired, dropped and was registered again. The registry only keeps the creation date of the current registration, while the Wayback Machine keeps captures from the earlier owner too.

**Does an older domain rank better?**

Not because of its age. Google representatives have said repeatedly that domain age alone is not a ranking factor. Older domains often rank well because they have collected links and content over the years, and that is what you should evaluate.

**Can I check the age of many domains at once?**

Yes. Paste one domain per line. Guests can check 5 at a time, free members 20 and Hunter Pro members 50.

**How do I check what the domain was used for in those years?**

Open the Wayback Machine calendar for the domain and read captures from several different years, or run the domain checker on this site, which samples the archive across the years and flags spam, parked and takeover periods for you.

## Age is the easy part. History is what matters.

See what the domain actually published over the years, who links to it and whether it was ever used for spam.
